On Saturday, Dec. 11, Children’s Homes will host a Houseparent Information session for anyone and everyone who’s interested in learning more about this work. If you’ve ever had a fleeting thought about whether you could be a houseparent, you’re invited to this informal session. Our staff members will share their experiences as houseparents, tell you how it works, field your questions about the ups and downs of the job, and take you on a tour of one of our Family Homes.

You’ll get a feel for the realities of houseparenting, and you’ll almost certainly be surprised at what you learn. It’s a low-pressure environment — we won’t sign you up on the spot (we promise!), we just want to help you better understand this ministry.

The session begins with coffee and juice at 10:00 in our gymnasium, and concludes with a sandwich lunch at noon. If you know of a Christian couple that might be interested in houseparenting, share this opportunity with them!

We do ask that you RSVP by Wednesday, Dec. 8, so we can make plans for the meals.

To RSVP, call Vickie Holland at 1.800.382.4114, ext. 123, or e-mail vholland@childrenshomes.org.

To learn more about this event, contact Houseparent Supervisor Toga Broom at 1.800.382.4114, ext. 139, or via e-mail at toga.broom@childrenshomes.org.

A Homecoming Primer
Here’s what to expect at this Saturday’s Homecoming

If you’ve never attended our Homecoming celebration, this would be a great year to change that. And we’d love to welcome you as our guest. Here’s what you can expect:

Homecoming is an annual event on our campus — always the last Saturday in September — that draws several hundred people for a day of shared memories and renewed friendships. We welcome former residents, former employees and all friends of the organization to attend.

We’ll begin the day at 10:30 with a program in our gymnasium. We’ll share news about Children’s Homes, and you’ll hear personal reflections about the organization from residents past and present. One of our special guests this year is Maj. Tim Norman, an iraq War veteran and one of our former residents. Maj. Norman will share stories of his tour of duty in Iraq and also his memories from his years at Children’s Homes.

After the program, we’ll break for lunch — and what a lunch it is! Our homecoming meal is fried catfish, chicken strips, fries, hush puppies, slaw and all the fixin’s!

When you’ve cleaned your plate, it’s time to “walk off” some of that meal, so we encourage you to stroll around our campus. Visit our homes and meet our houseparents and the children who live here. Take a tour of their homes and get to know them. They’ll serve you a slice of pie and a cup of coffee.

We’ll also have a horse-drawn wagon available for free rides, as well as an inflatable “bounce house” and slide, and a brand new playground for the kids as well.

Come on out to our Homecoming celebration this Saturday! We’d love to see you here.

The word “dependence” doesn’t sit well with many people, and especially not with Americans around July 4!

But we think you’ll agree that “dependence” is a beautiful word as it applies to our relationship to God. Christians are, after all, those who come to recognize that every element of their lives has been affected by their acceptance of God’s offer of salvation through Jesus Christ. That is, our only hope is in our total dependence upon Him.

Two teen girls in our care testified to their acceptance of that offer Sunday night, when both were baptized at the Main Street Church of Christ in Walnut Ridge (AR). It marked a very special day for both girls — their “Dependence Day,” if you will — and it began each girl’s journey of faith toward an eternity with God.

At Children’s Homes, we’re extremely proud when the young people in our care decide to make such a commitment to Christ. Each person they encounter on our campus strives to model authentic Christian living to these young people in hopes of helping them see the beauty of a life dependent on God.

Elfie Bates: A Southern Lady With A Heart For Children
The Story of Elfie Bate’s life is not just rags to riches but a journey of a soft-spoken, southern lady who lived a Christian life and made a difference in the lives of people she encountered along the way.
Ms. Bates was born May 27, 1936 in Arkansas, the daughter of the late Burlie and Vessis (Lemmons) Bates.
She graduated salutatorian from Pocahontas High School in 1955 and moved to Michigan to start her 45-year career at Pioneer State Mutual Insurance Company in Flint.
She poured herself into her work and church family, as well as taking care of her mother.
People who worked alongside her described her as dedicated, active, generous, kind, compassionate, unselfish, gentle, and faithful.
Ben Porter, a friend of Ms. Bates and a minister of the Davison Church of Christ in Michigan, says this about Elfie.
“She was an active member of the Davison congregation, but her activity wasn’t an upfront type, and she didn’t desire attention in that way. Quiet and shy, but oh my, what an influence this lady had and is continuing to have still today and for so many years to come, even in her death.”
Having never married or never having children of her own, she also wanted to make a difference in the lives of children, so she chose to donate a portion of her estate to Children’s Homes, Inc.
Micah Brinkley, executive director of Children’s Homes, said, “We are very grateful for the generosity of Ms. Bates and her desire to help provide a home for God’s children even after she passed on from her earthly life. Children for many years to come will reap the benefits of her giving spirit.”
Jan Albrough, another friend, summed up Ms. Bates’ life the best when she wrote: “I am proud of Elfie for the legacy she left and proud to call her my friend. God says, ‘Well done, Elfie! Well Done!’”

Houseparent Family. A married Christian couple or family will live in a provided home on our Paragould (Ark.) campus, and will provide care, oversight, correction and Christian training and example to a group of (up to 6) children/teens in the home. This position provides competitive compensation, regular time off, and numerous perks. Training and continuing education are also provided.
Caseworker. The successful candidate for this position with our Child and Family Services team will have a bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field, and preferrably some experience in a social work setting. This position will require work in our CHACE/Pathfinders (Outdoor Adventure Therapy) programs, so a love of the outdoors and the ability to backpack (carrying up to 60 lbs. over long distances in wilderness terrain), rappel, spelunk, use a compass, etc., will be required. Training and/or experience in high- and low-ropes course elements is also beneficial. The caseworker will also work with a caseload of children in residential and/or foster care at Children’s Homes.
Foster Family (Arkansas only). Children’s Homes seeks Christian families in Arkansas to provide care for children in need. Foster families open their homes to children in crisis, and are supported through Children’s Homes.
To learn more about any of these opportunities, contact Paul Schandevel, our Child & Family Services team director, at 1-800-382-4114, ext. 124.
Please note that background checks are mandatory for each of these positions.
