Residents and staff of Cherokee Home for Children were encouraged to wear the colors of their favored team to our annual Super Bowl party. Pictured from left are residents Chamm Fox and Andy Dozier, two Green Bay fans who were quite happy with the outcome of the game. It was a Super Sunday for Chamm in another way as well. The residents and staff of Cherokee Home for Children in rural San Saba County are mourning the death of their executive director since 1998, Danny Duggan, on Tuesday. The 59 year old Duggan received a life threatening head trauma while playing a basketball game last Wednesday between the staff of Cherokee Home and a group of college students from Texas A&M. The game was being played at Cherokee Home’s gymnasium and was attended by the staff and the children who are residents at the home. Mr. Duggan was transported by helicopter to the Brackenridge Trauma Center in Austin where he remained in a coma until his passing Tuesday afternoon.
Danny had worked for Cherokee Home for Children a total of 22 years and and had spent a lifetime working in residential childcare. For the last 13 years he served as Executive Director. He was an active participant in local and county activities including those at the Cherokee Church of Christ, Relay for Life, Cherokee Independent School District, and the communities of Cherokee and San Saba.
Hundreds of children have been positively affected by Mr. Duggan’s compassion and guidance. He was well known among his peers in childcare administration and as an advocate of children’s needs in churches across the state. He knew every child under his care, and was known as a man who gave second chances.
He leaves behind his wife, Janiece, and four married children and numerous grandchildren. Services for Mr. Duggan are scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 at the Church of Christ in San Saba, Texas.
Cherokee Home for Children is a faith based basic residential and foster childcare facility for over thirty children 2 to 18 years old. It is located 2 miles north of Cherokee, Texas in San Saba County.
