Lexa, Cory, and Michelle Long
The Board of Trustees announces the appointment of Cory Long to the CEO position. Cory and his wife, Michelle, have a daughter Lexa who will be in high school next fall.

Cory has experience in family businesses, youth ministry, and in child care at the Children’s Home of Lubbock and Albuquerque Christian Children’s Home. He has most recently been the Director of Development for New Mexico Christian Children’s Home.

Cory will arrive in mid-May, overlapping for a time of orientation with former director, Shellee Morrison, who is retiring to help her husband in his photography business and also indulge in some serious grandmothering.

The search committee was impressed by Cory’s experience in fundraising, not only his easy rapport with longtime donors, but his creative ideas for reaching younger people, developing the next generation of Carpenter Place supporters. Steve Clark, Board chairman states, “Cory brings a unique set of experiences and skills to this position, along with a real heart for serving children and families.”

For several years, Carpenter Place has had a specific program called Intensive Life Skills for girls 16 and older. Most recently, it has been housed in the Nelson Home and concentrates on teaching life skills to girls who will most likely transition to their own apartment rather than return home.

At the end of January 2011, we will open 6 one-bedroom units in the apartment building on 15th street for that program. A staff member, probably a single woman, will live in an apartment at the entrance to the hall and provide supervision and support for the young women in the program.

Why is this new program needed? We have not been able to receive referrals from local agencies who are looking for programs for girls transitioning from foster care, because they require an apartment setting, not a group home. There is a great need in our community for services for the 18-24 year old population. It is the fastest growing demographic in the homeless population. Of those in that age range in homeless shelters, a third of them have been in foster care.
