ROSS ROAD CHURCH OF CHRIST BRINGS BIBLE STUDY TO HICKORY HILL APARTMENT COMMUNITY
(Memphis, TN) – On a summer day in June, 26 youth gathered for a bible study class at Autumn Ridge Apartments in Hickory Hill. Percell Duckett, an elder at Ross Road Church of Christ and a former Agape Board Member, led the bible study on the topic of ‘The Creation’. All attending youth were supplied with bibles, compliments of the congregation. This lesson and gift is just part of the community outreach efforts of Powerlines Community Network, a collaborative effort of multiple agencies bringing site-based services such as mentoring, GED classes, housing to homeless families, community restoration, parenting skills building and tutoring to primarily apartment communities in need. Powerlines Community Network is led by Agape Child & Family Services.

Initiated in March 2009, Powerlines Community Network’s mission is to connect under-resourced neighborhoods with the services needed to help create a more nurturing environment for children and families. Agape and its collaborative partners are currently serving through Powerlines Community Network not only in Hickory Hill, but also in Whitehaven, and there are plans for launching services in the Raleigh/Frayser area this fall.

“The purpose of Powerlines Community Network is to be a catalyst for Christ-centered services, education, and advocacy,” says Kristee Bell, Director of Powerlines Community Network. “Generosity like that of Ross Road Church of Christ is critical to the success of our programs in these communities.” Powerlines Community Network strives to reach children and families in Memphis’ most blighted areas and then connect them with the resources they desire and need, such as churches in their own community (like Ross Road) and other agencies and groups providing their services that directly meet the needs of the youth and families where they live: in their apartment community. One of the goals of Powerlines Community Network is to set the standard for excellence and effectiveness in preserving and enhancing relationships, transforming lives and building or restoring a loving community for those being served.

For more information about Powerlines Community Network, call Kristee Bell at 901.323.3600 or email kristee.bell@agapemeanslove.org

Suggestions for using this Bible study

1. Begin by reading each passage in your own Bible. Read the larger context so you can be sure of how the writer is using the passage cited. This kind of study will take time, but will allow you to be more confident in the presentation.

2. Read over the study and write out what you think is the main point. Pray over that main point. Are you doing it in your own life or have you too become sidetracked? Pray that God would show you want keeps people from doing his will. Ask that you might be sensitive to the hearts to which you speak.

3. Begin the lesson with a prayer. Confess your own sin or inadequacy in the prayer and mention the things God has shown you in your private prayer time before him. Ask God to lift these things from you and your listeners.

4. Edit and change the Bible study so that it fits your ability and style. This Bible study was not meant to be read to a church or class. It is only intended to point in a direction and to provide material that can be altered to suit a particular situation.
