Agape’s Heartlight Event Addresses Tough Issues in Memphis, Tennessee

heartlight(Memphis, TN) – Agape Child & Family Services’ annual Heartlight event was held on Saturday, November 7th at the Agricenter.  This year’s event, themed “Powerlines” was a unique, engaging, interactive experience that took participants through real-life experiences taking place in the Memphis community and introduced exciting new ways Agape has planned to bring help and hope to children and families in at-risk neighborhoods.  Among the guests were Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. and his wife, Ruby.  The event raised over $300,000 in support of Agape.  Mark and Melinda George of Intermodal Cartage served as top sponsor of this event.

Among the scenarios acted out for participants were a 64-year-old grandmother who has become the sole guardian for eight of her grandchildren, a 24-year-old homeless woman who has six children, the waiting room of a public health clinic where four young pregnant girls are waiting to be seen and a tragic story about two men and their criminal backgrounds in the bullpen at 201 Poplar.

“We wanted our guests to be able to see, feel and hear the experience of Memphians who are attempting to handle their difficulties of inner-city life,” said David Jordan, Agape’s executive director.  “These are the people whom Agape is reaching out to serve through its programs.”

In addition, local ministry, community leaders and even children who have been helped by Agape spoke during a presentation, explaining what Agape and other local community groups are trying to do to help those less fortunate in our city.  Guests were also also invited to view a photo exhibition of the city’s at-risk neighborhoods and its residents.

“We’re hopeful, and we believe in Memphis,” remarked Marka Bennett, Agape Board Member and Chair of Heartlight.  “We hope this event brings a heightened awareness of the issues our city faces, and also invigorates our citizens to act – to volunteer, foster, adopt and support those in need in our community.”
