Ralph Richardson, Executive Director of Hope Harbor, Shares Facts Regarding America’s Children

Some facts about America’s children…
In the United States, nearly 800,000 children a year are victims of child
abuse and neglect.
In 80% of these cases, one or more parents is the perpetrator.
In Oklahoma, nearly 63,000 child abuse reports are made annually.
Over 13,000 cases receiving an investigation are substantiated.
Childhood trauma can change how the brain processes information.
Childhood trauma has been clearly linked to negative health outcomes in
adulthood.
The earlier intervention can be introduced, the better chance there is for
improving a child’s life.

Prevention is so important…

Most recent estimates indicate 1,760 children die each year due to
maltreatment.
More than 75% of fatalities are children younger than 4 years old.
Nearly 70% of fatalities are caused by one or more parent.
Oklahoma ranks fifth in the nation per capita in child fatalities due to
maltreatment.

These numbers are based on deaths officially determined to be due to
abuse and neglect.  Studies indicated as many as 50 to 60% of child
deaths due to abuse are not reported as such.

We must all do what we can to make a difference in the lives of children.
Our children can’t wait.
